STANANDLOU ADVERTISING GREETS THE NEW YEAR WITH THREE NEW BUSINESS WINS

Tuesday, January 29th, 2002

Houston — Stan and Lou Advertising has gained $2 million in new billings with the addition of three new clients. The 18-person shop in Houston, Texas, won all three accounts in separate reviews in the last month of 2001.

The list of new accounts include Tortuga Coastal Cantina, a regional Mexican restaurant chain owned by Mexican Restaurants, Inc.; Tootsies, an upscale women’s wear boutique specializing in designer wear and couture; and Crisis Intervention, a non-profit organization providing a 24-hour telephone hotline, corporate counseling services and referrals. The agency will provide a full range of advertising services including print and television production, media placement, collateral, and internet development.

Tortuga Coastal Cantina chose Stan and Lou based on the agency’s success with the Monterey’s Tex-Mex Cafe and Little Mexico brands in 2001, both restaurants under the Mexican Restaurants, Inc. banner. “Stan and Lou basically came in and revamped our marketing efforts with the introduction of quarterly promotions, in-store events, contests and bounce-back programs,” noted Kim Hankamer, Marketing Director of Mexican Restaurants, Inc. “Anyone who can produce monthly double-digit sales increases is certainly somebody we want on our Tortuga team.”

“Tortuga has built a tremendous following by offering quality Mexican food in a fun, wholesome environment,” noted Lou Congelio, President of Stan and Lou. “Our primary goal is to increase awareness of the Tortuga brand and promote the quality of their food through a testimonial campaign and a new tagline, “Simply great Mexican food.”

Initial work for Tortuga will center around a new television campaign and a revamped menu and collateral package.

Tortuga Coastal Cantina is a part of a concept theme of restaurants run by Mexican Restaurants, Inc. which currently has 51 company restaurants and 35 franchise restaurants operating in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Idaho and Michigan.

Tootsies selected Stan and Lou based on work produced by the agency several years ago for the client. “We are delighted once again to be working with Tootsies,” stated Congelio. “We produced some work for them in the 90’s that remains to this day some of our most creative and successful advertising.”

“We talked to a few agencies in Dallas and Houston but Stan and Lou were the only ones who truly understood us,” reported Mickey Rosmarin, owner of Tootsies. “We have a very unique customer and a very unique store. Stan and Lou gets it!”

The agency will begin work on a variety of projects including a new Spring Image Campaign and a direct mail/internet Prom promotion.

Stan and Lou was also tapped by Crisis Intervention of Houston to head a new branding initiative reintroducing Crisis Intervention’s services to potential users and volunteers. Crisis Intervention is a non-profit organization providing 24-hour telephone counseling and referral services.

“We had a lot of stressful events in 2001,” noted Shari Koziol, Executive Director of Crisis Intervention . “Between the September terrorist attacks, the flood, layoffs and the recession, there are many people in Houston who are deeply affected and need someone with whom they can talk. Unfortunately, many people don’t even know we exist.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to have been chosen by Crisis Intervention to head their awareness push,” stated Congelio. “They are an incredible group of people providing a much needed and under utilized, free service to Houston. We are honored to be asked to help.”

Stan and Lou Advertising is a full-service advertising agency with over $20 million in billings. Clients include, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, Trendmaker Homes, Coastal Banc, Scripps Clinic, Marble Slab Creamery, Monterey’s Tex-Mex Cafe, Little Mexico, 104 KRBE, The Texas Back Institute, The Mercury Room, Zula, Boaka Bar and Time Warner Cable.

STANANDLOU GETS KINKY!

Thursday, December 6th, 2001

Houston, TX—Stan & Lou Advertising has enlisted the talents of Texas author, singer and folk legend Kinky Friedman to spread the word about the crisis of animal overpopulation in a public service television spot created for the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP provides free and low cost sterilization of pets through spay and neuter clinic facilities accessible to the general public in Houston and San Antonio.

The spot titled “Rex”, produced in both :30 and :60 versions, opens on flashes of barbwire and of guards walking down a prison hallway. The guards enter a jail cell as Friedman’s voiceover relates the stark reality of life for his friend Rex, who has fallen on hard times, “With no home and no family… his only crime was being born. Now he’s going to die.”

As the camera moves to the execution chamber and a doctor prepares the syringe, a hand lifts a cage up to a steel table to reveal that Rex is a dog about to be put to sleep.

“Kinky was the natural choice for us as spokesperson,” stated Lou Congelio, President of Stan & Lou. “His rugged look and gruff persona made the prison scenes and storyline very believable. He looks like he actually could have a friend on death row. Just kidding, Kinky.”

Sean Hawkins, SNAP’s Executive Director, noted, “Landing a celebrity spokesperson like Kinky Friedman immediately added credibility and power to our television commercial and our cause.”

“Another reason we liked Kinky for the spot was that he is a true animal lover,” added Congelio. “Not only does he have a heart of gold but he’s also been running an animal rescue ranch down in Utopia, Texas, for the last three years. Like I said, he was a natural choice.”

“The point of the spot,” noted Sean Hawkins, “was to dramatize the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats to prevent needless suffering.”

Each year, more than a million dogs and cats end up in Texas animal shelters. 90% of them are destroyed. Surgical sterilization of dogs and cats offers an immediate and humane solution to the destruction of healthy animals due to overpopulation. The SNAP spots will be distributed to television stations statewide in an effort to heighten awareness of the need to help save lives through the prevention of unwanted pets.

Others involved in the production of the TV spots include Dan Blust of Bill Young Productions, Director, Gary Foster of Bill Young Productions, Editor, and Josh Powers, Copywriter/Producer. To view a Quicktime version of the spots, go to

Christmas Comes Early at Stan & Lou Advertising

Wednesday, December 27th, 2000

Houston — Stan and Lou Advertising has gained $2 million in new billings with the addition of three new clients. The 15-person shop in Houston, Texas, won all three accounts in separate reviews in the last two months of 2000.

Stan & Lou Advertising has added Monterey’s Little Mexico and Tex Mex Cafe, a regional mexican restaurant chain owned by Mexican Restaurants, Inc.; Lukens Energy Group, an international software company and consultant group to the energy industry; and Zula, an upscale restaurant in downtown Houston. The full-service agency will provide services ranging from television production to internet development and media placement.

Mexican Restaurants, Inc. chose Stan and Lou to mobilize a campaign, comprised of television, radio, outdoor and in-store collateral and promotional materials for Monterey’s Little Mexico and Tex Mex Cafe. “We were intrigued by Stan and Lou’s creative reputation,” noted Kim Berry, Marketing Director of Mexican Restaurants, Inc. “So when we discovered they were equally adept in strategic planning and media placement, we knew we had found our team. Needless to say, we are looking forward to a very successful 2001.”

Monterey’s Tex Mex Cafe and Monterey’s Little Mexico are a part of a concept theme of restaurants run by Mexican Restaurants, Inc. which currently has 57 company restaurants and 35 franchise restaurants operating in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Idaho and Michigan.

“Both Monterey’s Tex Mex Cafe and Monterey’s Little Mexico have built a tremendous following by offering quality Mexican food in a fun, wholesome environment,” noted Lou Congelio, President of Stan & Lou. “Our first goal is to increase awareness of the Monterey brand while encouraging repeat visits and developing new business strategies to prompt initial trial by first-time guests.”

Stan & Lou will kick-off the campaign with a sweepstakes promotion beginning in January 2001 followed by a roll-out of television and radio slated to break in February. The new business amounts to billings nearing $1 million.

Lukens Energy Group selected Stan & Lou to launch a new corporate identity program which will introduce their new look, logo and positioning line. The campaign will consist of national magazine advertising, direct mail, collateral and website design and implementation.

“We are very excited about the synergy we share with Stan & Lou,” noted Jay Lukens, President of Lukens Energy Group. “We felt we needed to align ourselves with an agency that places the same emphasis on creative and strategic thinking that we bring to our clients. We found that in Stan & Lou.”

“Working with Lukens Energy Group gives us the opportunity to revisit our business-to-business expertise,” stated Lou Congelio. “We are very excited about the collaboration and welcome the opportunity to once again enter the energy arena. Lukens is a leader in the energy industry and we’re proud to become a part of their success.”

Stan & Lou Advertising was chosen to help launch Zula based on their success in helping co-owner David Edwards open The Mercury Room, one of the premiere bars and nightclubs in downtown Houston.

“I’m very excited to be working with Stan & Lou again. Naturally, I was drawn to them because of the success we’ve had with The Mercury Room, but also because of their willingness to embrace the client as a true part of the creative process,” stated Edwards.

“We are truly fortunate to be working with a client like David Edwards,” stated Lou Congelio. “He’s smart, has a vision and can express it well to the people he needs to make it happen. What he has done with The Mercury Room is phenomenal, We’re looking for the same results with Zula.” The Mercury Room was recently ranked among the top 25 bars and nightclubs in America by Playboy Magazine.

STAN & LOU ADVERTISING WINS NATIONAL ADDY AWARD

Monday, July 17th, 2000

(Houston- June 28, 2000) – Stan & Lou Advertising came home with the gold as only one of two Houston-area advertising agencies to win a national ADDY Award at this year’s American Advertising Federation’s annual award show in Las Vegas, NV. The award, for the Texas Neurofibromatosis Foundation, won for a poster campaign in the Public Service Advertising category. The only other Houston winner was McCann-Erickson for a television spot promoting Texas Tourism.

“We are extremely proud to have won this very prestigious national award,” says Lou Congelio, President of Stan & Lou. “Not only does it say a lot about the caliber of work coming out of Houston but it also brings much needed attention to an unknown and misunderstood disease, neurofibromatosis (NF).

The American Advertising Federation awarded 105 national ADDY Awards from among 1,569 finalists and close to 60,000 total entries from agencies throughout the United States. They are considered by many to be the industry’s largest and most respected creative competition.

The winning poster campaign features three people afflicted with varying manifestations of neurofibromatosis. Each full-size poster includes a photo of each person smiling along with interesting and fun bits of trivia about each person.

Megan, whose outward appearance shows no sign of the disease, is a “tickle monster” and a “dessert specialist” who loves to torment her sister and is also a “Straight-A student.” Darryl, or D.L. to his friends, has thousands of match-tip size tumors covering his body, is a “hopeless romantic” and a “devoted husband” who is a two-step king,” an “expert fisherman” and a very “huggable grandpa.” Reggie, a young man whose face is disfigured by tumors, is described as a “class cut-up”, a web-surfer, a Kenny Rogers fan, trivia whiz, poetry enthusiast and a caring uncle.”

“Neurofibromatosis can be a very disfiguring disease and it can happen to anyone,” added Congelio. “ What we tried to show is that NF sufferers have the same needs, wants, talents and interests as anyone else. They just happen to have a disease that causes tumors to grow on the outside. We wanted people to get to see the person that is on the inside. It’s that simple.”

“We are extremely proud of the work Stan & Lou has done on behalf of the Texas Neurofibromatosis Foundation,” stated Kathy Price, Executive Director of the Texas Neurofibromatosis Foundation. “They show a level of understanding, sensitivity and compassion that continually comes through in everything they do for us. We are very fortunate to have them on our team.”

In the earlier Houston competition leading up to the national award show, Stan & Lou won 10 local ADDYs (the second highest amount of awards in the competition) and three 10th District ADDY’s for its work for Riverway Bank, the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (S.N.A.P.), 104 KRBE, Icon Ventures, Coastal Banc and River Oaks Animal Hospital.

Among the winners of this year’s national award show includes Leo Burnett USA for Best of Show in Print for an Altoids ad for Kraft Foods, Inc. The Best of Show in Broadcast went to Young and Rubicam, Chicago, for a commercial for H&R Block. Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, OR, eclipsed all others in the sheer number of ADDYs, winning 10 awards for work produced for AltaVista, Nike, Powerbar and Stamps.com. The judges awarded seven ADDYs each to DDB Chicago and to Goodby, Silverstein and Partners. All seven ADDYs won by DDB were for work it produced for Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, including the highly popular “Whassup” campaign. Goodby, Silverstein and Partners won two ADDYs for Anheuser-Busch as well as for advertising for E*Trade, Nike and the California Milk Advisory Board.

Wednesday, May 19th, 1999

(Houston — May 19, 1999) — Stan & Lou Advertising has been named agency of record for Keystone Land Co., a developer of weekend home property in North Houston. Initial plans call for the agency to introduce Waterwood, a master-planned community on Lake Livingston, to real estate agents and people buying lots for a second home.

“We talked with several agencies in town and Stan & Lou just seemed to fit the profile of what we were looking for,” said John Harris, Marketing Director for Keystone Land Co. “They’re extremely creative, that’s a given. But what really impressed us is their ability to turn that creativity into sales. They immediately grasped our situation and proposed what, in our mind, is the perfect marketing solution.”

“Introducing Waterwood is a tremendous opportunity for us to build the brand correctly,” said Lou Congelio, president of Stan & Lou. “We’re starting from scratch here and helping to mold an image for a company that has an incredible product. A considerable part of our job of selling these lots has already been done by Mother Nature. The rest is up to us.”

The multi-media Waterwood campaign, centered on the theme line “Replenish Your Soul,” will include print, outdoor, radio and an Internet presence.

“We’re very pleased with the direction of the campaign,” added Harris. “The theme line ‘Replenish Your Soul’ really captures the rejuvenating atmosphere people seek in a vacation home.” “It pretty much wrote itself,” added Congelio. “After touring the property, we got a very good sense of how peaceful and relaxing Waterwood is. In fact, it was hard to leave and come back to the office. We’re still looking for one of our writers.”

Waterwood, conceived and developed in the early 1970’s as a vacation home community, offers access to Waterwood National Golf Course and Resort, as well as fishing and watersport opportunities on scenic Lake Livingston. The community was recently purchased by Keystone Land Co. from Maxxam, Inc. STAN & LOU ADVERTISING CONTINUES “MORNING SHOW” STREAK

Friday, April 30th, 1999

(Houston — April 30, 1999) — Stan & Lou Advertising has recently completed a television campaign for 104 KRBE’s top-rated “Sam Malone and the Morning Show,” continuing their string of highly successful KRBE TV campaigns. The spots will begin airing immediately and throughout the current rating sweeps period.

The new campaign features three :30 spots, each designed to show, in a humorous way, the unique personalities of each Morning Show through the eyes of their associates. In one spot entitled “Sam,” Maria Todd speaks about Sam Malone’s spontaneous delivery and his penchant for off-the-cuff remarks. “He’s a natural,” says Todd. While she talks, we see cutaways of Sam Malone practicing his jokes in private, perfecting his delivery of the punch line.

In another spot entitled “Maria,” Sam Malone discusses his colleague Maria’s extremely professional approach to reporting “(news) stories that make a difference.” He even goes so far as to compare Maria to Connie Chung and Barbara Walters. In the meantime, we see cutaways of Maria leafing through the weekly tabloids looking for “news” items for her daily “Hollywood Dirt” report.

“Last year we had the Morning Show set in a diner, talking about random topics, much like they do on their show,” said Lou Congelio, president of Stan & Lou. “So, the natural extension of that concept seemed to be getting them to talk about themselves and each other — using the same humor that has made the Morning Show so popular.”

The campaign also includes five :15 spots dealing with typical Morning Show topics in typical Morning Show fashion. Subjects range from the Monica Lewinsky diet to tattooed body parts to prima donnas and famous Houston newscasters.

“These spots are the perfect vehicle for the Morning Show. They really convey the Morning Show’s unique brand of humor in a very unexpected way,” said Mark Shecterle, KRBE’s Marketing Director. “And they also allow the viewers to get to know the Morning Show personalities a little better in a very relevant way.”

“Sam, Maria and Robbie are incredibly funny, both on-air and off,” Congelio added. “This was a great opportunity to show the listeners what goes on after the microphones go off. We especially like the part where we got to throw Robbie off the roof of KRBE. Fortunately, he had a parachute on at the time. That day, he really showed us what he’s made of.”

Production credits include: Clay Peres, Director/Offline Editor, Times 3 Productions; Cliff Davis, Online Editor, VTTV; Harry Schluderberg, Audio Engineer, New Century Sound and Steve Franko, Colorist, Video Post & Transfer, Dallas.

STAN & LOU ADVERTISING UNVEILS NEW CAMPAIGN FOR KELSEY-SEYBOLD CLINIC

Monday, September 28th, 1998

(HOUSTON – SEPTEMBER 28,1998) -    Stan & Lou Advertising has completed a multi-media advertising campaign for Houston client, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. The campaign, consisting of television, radio, outdoor, print and collateral, introduces Kelsey’s new positioning line, “Your Doctors for lifeSM” . Television and radio spots will run on all major stations in the Houston market. Outdoor boards are posted with newspaper and magazine ads to begin shortly.

“The objective of the campaign was to communicate to the consumer what Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is; that we are a group of doctors and specialists dedicated to the preservation of life and the well-being of our patients and that we will be there for our patients when they need us,” stated Dennis Bolin, Regional Director of Marketing for MedPartners, parent company of Kelsey-Seybold.

“First and foremost, we wanted to graphically convey the level of commitment and dedication that Kelsey-Seybold doctors have toward their patients;  that they are very serious when it comes to the health and quality of life of their patients,” stated Lou Congelio, President of Stan & Lou Advertising. “Second, that they are very good at what they do and provide a wide range of services. And lastly, that they are doctors, not an HMO.” “Apparently, there is still some confusion in the marketplace concerning Kelsey-Seybold and healthcare providers in general,” added Bolin. “Many people still aren’t sure
if we’re an HMO, PPO or a healthcare provider. We wanted to put an end to this question once and for all.”

The television commercials feature Kelsey-Seybold Clinic doctors, and their patients, in a variety of situations and settings. Shot on-location at Kelsey-Seybold, the monochromatic scenes are dramatically lit and are accompanied by a rich, dramatic music score and emotional narration to underscore the seriousness of the message. “We wanted to give the spots a look and feel all their own so they wouldn’t be confused with any other healthcare commercials in the market,” stated Congelio. “We believe there is no other healthcare provider in the city that can provide the level of care and service that Kelsey does. It was important that their commercials look like no other as well.”

The print, collateral and outdoor materials mirror the television spots with scenes from the commercial and the headline “Your Doctors for life.” Radio spots consist of testimonials from Kelsey-Seybold Clinic doctors, nurses and staff detailing the range of services, care and commitment to quality that Kelsey provides.

“We have had the pleasure of working with Stan & Lou since 1990 and I believe this campaign is their finest work ever,” added Bolin. “They have distilled, defined and  refined everything that Kelsey-Seybold Clinic stands for into one succinct and powerful message — “Your doctors for life.” Needless to say, everyone at Kelsey-Seybold and MedPartners is very excited!”–

Television production credits include: Clay Peres, Director, Times 3 Productions; Matt Holicek, Offline/Online Senior Editor, VTTV; Laychin Lee – Flame Artist, VTTV; Harry Schluderberg, Post-Score Supervisor, New Century Sound; and Steve Franko, Colorist, Video Post & Transfer, Dallas.
