STANANDLOU had just opened the doors on their new shiny advertising agency, STANANDLOU. They had an office, telephones and brand new computers. All they needed now were clients.
Enter Jim Archibald and Sandy Beels from Coastal Corporation.
Jim and Sandy were gurus in the marketing/advertising department at Coastal and were looking for some “bright, new freelancers who knew a thing or too about gasoline advertising.” Stan and I both had lengthy experience working on the EXXON and Conoco accounts at McCann-Erickson and Taylor Brown & Barnhill and were given an assignment.
First, it was a print ad for the Wall Street Journal. Next, some trade ads for their natural gas division. Then we started doing radio spots with good friend, Felix Rhymes of Rhymes and Company. Finally, after proving ourselves and our capabilities to everyone at Coastal, we were asked to create their 1992 television ad campaign for their subsidiary, Coastal Mart.
The client was thrilled, We were very happy. And the spots came out great. Soon, we were handling all of the advertising for their Coastal Mart convenience stores throughout the country as well as their corporate advertising in WSJ and various trade mags.
Then, in 1996, advertising manager, Sandy Beels retired. Looking for a replacement, Coastal management asked Stan if he “knew someone who knew their business and also knew their way around advertising. Someone like you, Stan.” Well, that’s all it took. Stan accepted and soon became the client. And I had to start being nice to him!
STANANDLOU continued to produce award-winning, strategically focused advertising for Coastal through Stan’s tenure producing a branding campaign for their gasolines.
However, all good things must come to an end. In 2001, a merger was announced with El Paso Energy. All marketing and advertising was to be handled by El Paso’s internal marketing department.
Stan is now at Shell. Coastal is no more. And STANANDLOU has been enriched by its association with both. – Lou
