Stan & Lou: The Beginning!
The first time Stan & Lou ever appeared in print was in this newspaper article I dug out of the Stan & Lou vault.
This was how the old Houston Post dealt with our new, unusual name, although to us, there was nothing unusual about us.
We came up with the name due to two important things in our lives.
First, Stan and I were roommates back in 1979-1980 when we worked for McCann-Erickson. Whenever we had a party or something, everyone would say, “Hey, let’s go to Stan and Lou’s” (The second option was sticking hot needles in your eyeballs.)
Well, the name kind of stuck.
Secondly, there was an incredible radio commercial production company in LA by the name of Dick & Bert. I worshipped them like they were Gods (which they were) and thought anything that sounded like their name would be a good thing.
So, when we went into Stan’s father-in-law’s law office to sign the papers, he asked, “Well, what going to be the name of your company.” And we both said Stan & Lou although neither
one of us had discussed it before hand.
Yeah, it was kind of weird.
Laurel Brubaker Calkins of the Houston Business Journal was a little more straightforward in their description.
We appreciated both!
My former employer in Youngstown, Ohio, the Austintown Leader went all out with not only a two-column mention but even a photo. Unfortunately it was a photo I would have preferred they had thrown away but I guess it’s too late for that.
I was the sports editor at the Leader during my junior year in high school. It was a lot of fun but the pay was pretty miserable, $25 a week. But hey, I was published!
