Spring Bayou City Arts Festival

Walking Tree

This weekend was great for being outdoors, and what better way to spend your time outdoors than at a Arts Festival? The Spring Bayou City Arts Festival is in Memorial Park, a good setting to spend the day wandering among art.

Sarah Sides, Allison Johnson (the Intern) and I all volunteered at the Beer Booth, with tips benefiting SNAP (Spay and Neuter Assistance Program) in the morning. It has been something that I have done for the past few years and decided to share the fun. I have always wondered what it is like to be a bartender, and this is the closest I get to finding out. Usually there is a group of 7-10 people serving up beer, water, sodas and iced tea. It is a really good time in that you meet others in the Houston ad/marketing community (and others) AND you get to try new beers, not always craft beers, but definitely ones you don’t generally find elsewhere.

This weekend, as you can imagine, got pretty busy and by the time our shift ended at 2pm, there were lines backed up at least 10 people deep. I am happy that SNAP was able to get some of the monetary support it needed through the tips. People were all very generous and many came back because of our dazzling smiles and quick service (if I do say so myself.) :)

If you want to volunteer next time (Spring or Fall), get in touch with Tad Grow at Brandit Marketing. It is a lot of fun!

And the Emmy Goes to… STANANDLOU

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

STANANDLOU Advertising/Marketing, in association with KHOU-TV Houston and VT2 Media Design and Communication, won a coveted Emmy Award for Best Public Announcement Campaign at the Lone Star Chapter of the National Television Academy Emmy Awards held on October 15 in Dallas. The awards show attracted television professionals from across Texas to salute excellence in broadcasting.

The award-winning campaign consists of two 30-second television commercials promoting the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP). The commercials feature KHOU-TV’s Lisa Foronda, one of SNAP’s devoted supporters, as well as three other Houston actors. The commercials were written and produced by STANANDLOU Creative Director Lou Congelio, STANANDLOU Associate Creative Director Josh Powers, VT2 General Manager Cliff Davis, and KHOU-TV Director of Public Relations Wendy Burkeen.

“As far as I know, this joint project between a local network affiliate, an ad agency and a production company is the first of its kind anywhere in the country,” said STANANDLOU Marketing/Advertising President Lou Congelio. “Not only did everyone put their egos aside to collaborate on this incredible project, but we all put our fees aside and did the work pro-bono. The results have been overwhelmingly positive.”

In addition to the two Emmy-winning commercials, STANANDLOU has created two other commercials for SNAP, and each one has won awards in multiple advertising industry competitions over the past five years.

“Doing award-winning work is very rewarding,” noted Congelio. “But doing work that also makes a positive impact in the community, as these commercials have, is one of the true testaments to the power of creative advertising.”

STANANDLOU is a full-service communication firm based in Houston, with projected 2005 billings of $27 million. Starting as a creative boutique in 1988, the agency has grown to a top-five full service agency that pushes the creative envelope. Clients include Aphelion Software, Christus Spohn Health Systems, Constellation NewEnergy, Harbercraft, The Houstonian, Kelsey-Seybold Clinics, LOGIX Communications, Monterey’s/Little Mexico, The Redstone, and UHY Advisors.

LOU CONGELIO NAMED 2002 CLEVELAND AMORY
HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR

HOUSTON, TX – The Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) has announced Lou Congelio as the recipient of the 2002 Cleveland Amory Humanitarian of the Year Award. This annual award was created to honor those who make outstanding contributions to the cause of animal protection on a local, state, or national level.

The award, named after life-long champion of animals and author Cleveland Amory will be presented to Mr. Congelio on Saturday, September 14, 2002, at the “Paws & Claws on Parade – A Salute to National Geographic” gala at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. This is the sixth annual fundraising gala benefiting SNAP which provided direct care to 39,092 dogs and cats last year through clinic facilities in Houston, San Antonio, Albuquerque, and Monterrey, Mexico.

Lou Congelio, President of Stan & Lou Advertising, demonstrates an ongoing commitment to improving both the lives of people and animals through his charitable works. Lou was one of the initial organizers of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s “Race for the Cure” in Houston, and has served on the board of directors of the Texas Neurofibramatosis Foundation (NF) for the last five years.

Through his advertising agency, Lou has produced publicity material and award-winning Public Service Announcements for NF, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Race for the Cure, Crisis Intervention of Houston and SNAP. The PSA series created by Lou for SNAP features Texas folk-legend Kinky Friedman and is currently airing on television stations across the state of Texas. In addition to producing all of SNAP’s publicity materials, Lou developed and spearheaded the campaign to market the Texas “Animal Friendly” license plates which has generated $1 million in funding for spay and neuter clinic programs in Texas.

Previous recipients of the Cleveland Amory Humanitarian of the Year Award have been Leslie & Nanci Alexander, Micheal & Francie Willis, Jake Hershey, The Honorable Debra Danbury, and Barney & Ellen Kogen.

Jimmy Jongebloed, President of Houston’s Studio of the Americas, is the Honorary Chair of this year’s event. According to Jongebloed, “SNAP is an important part of the community, helping both animals and people in need. Charities in Houston have weathered the effects of September 11th and are now facing the impact of the collapse of corporate giant ENRON. Because of SNAP’s critical mission to “save lives through prevention,” we are all committed to make this year’s gala be a tremendous success.”

Houston’s own “Krewe of Olympus,” an authentic Mardi Gras Krewe, will mesmerize as they entertain revelers with all of the beads, doubloons, pageantry, and masquerade costumes with a theme saluting National Geographic magazine. This sure-to-be sellout gala extravaganza is not to be missed!

Table sales for “Paws & Claws on Parade” are currently under way. For information on the event, contact SNAP at (713) 862-3863. To learn more about SNAP, the organization dedicated to “saving lives through prevention,” visit www.snaptx.org.

STANANDLOU GETS KINKY!

Thursday, December 6th, 2001

Houston, TX—Stan & Lou Advertising has enlisted the talents of Texas author, singer and folk legend Kinky Friedman to spread the word about the crisis of animal overpopulation in a public service television spot created for the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP provides free and low cost sterilization of pets through spay and neuter clinic facilities accessible to the general public in Houston and San Antonio.

The spot titled “Rex”, produced in both :30 and :60 versions, opens on flashes of barbwire and of guards walking down a prison hallway. The guards enter a jail cell as Friedman’s voiceover relates the stark reality of life for his friend Rex, who has fallen on hard times, “With no home and no family… his only crime was being born. Now he’s going to die.”

As the camera moves to the execution chamber and a doctor prepares the syringe, a hand lifts a cage up to a steel table to reveal that Rex is a dog about to be put to sleep.

“Kinky was the natural choice for us as spokesperson,” stated Lou Congelio, President of Stan & Lou. “His rugged look and gruff persona made the prison scenes and storyline very believable. He looks like he actually could have a friend on death row. Just kidding, Kinky.”

Sean Hawkins, SNAP’s Executive Director, noted, “Landing a celebrity spokesperson like Kinky Friedman immediately added credibility and power to our television commercial and our cause.”

“Another reason we liked Kinky for the spot was that he is a true animal lover,” added Congelio. “Not only does he have a heart of gold but he’s also been running an animal rescue ranch down in Utopia, Texas, for the last three years. Like I said, he was a natural choice.”

“The point of the spot,” noted Sean Hawkins, “was to dramatize the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats to prevent needless suffering.”

Each year, more than a million dogs and cats end up in Texas animal shelters. 90% of them are destroyed. Surgical sterilization of dogs and cats offers an immediate and humane solution to the destruction of healthy animals due to overpopulation. The SNAP spots will be distributed to television stations statewide in an effort to heighten awareness of the need to help save lives through the prevention of unwanted pets.

Others involved in the production of the TV spots include Dan Blust of Bill Young Productions, Director, Gary Foster of Bill Young Productions, Editor, and Josh Powers, Copywriter/Producer. To view a Quicktime version of the spots, go to

STANANDLOU ADVERTISING GETS THE GOLD FOR PUBLIC SERVICE SPOTS

Wednesday, November 7th, 2001

Houston, TX—Stan & Lou Advertising received top honors last week from the
Art Directors Club of Houston for two public service television spots created for the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP provides free and low cost sterilization of pets through spay and neuter clinic facilities accessible to the general public in Houston and San Antonio.

In the first spot, “Rex”, a :60 television spot which received a Gold Award in the Pro Bono/Public Service category, Stan & Lou Advertising enlisted the talents of Texas author, singer and folk legend Kinky Friedman.

The spot opens on flashes of barbwire and of guards walking down a prison hallway.

The second SNAP spot, “Sparky”, received a Silver Award in the Pro Bono/Public Service Category and a Judges Choice Award. This spot opens with a cute Jack Russell terrier jumping up and down with anticipation as his owner explains to him that he’s about to take him for a ride and abandon him.

“The point of both spots,” noted Sean Hawkins, “was to dramatize in very different ways the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats to prevent needless suffering.”

Each year, more than a million dogs and cats end up in Texas animal shelters. 90% of them are destroyed. Surgical sterilization of dogs and cats offers an immediate and humane solution to end the urban crisis of animal overpopulation.
Both SNAP spots will be distributed to television stations statewide in an effort to heighten awareness of the need to help save lives through the prevention of unwanted pets.

Stan & Lou Advertising also received Art Directors Club accolades in the form of three Bronze Awards. Two awards went to print ads created for Boaka Bar, a new nightclub concept in downtown Houston from the owners of Zula and the Mercury Room, and one went to a poster series created for the Austin Huns, an Austin rugby team.
